Sean Shibe plays guitar without limits, earning acclaim in prestigious recital halls and being praised for his recent Bach album as “the best-ever Bach recording on guitar” by Gramophone Magazine. For his Australian debut, Shibe celebrates his Scottish heritage in a thrilling concert that merges classical music with innovative expression.
The performance begins with a tribute to Scotland's rich folklore, featuring haunting solo music collected by Lady Margaret Wemyss in her family’s Fife castle, interspersed with vibrant Scottish folk songs. A new commission from contemporary composer Cassandra Miller ties this historical narrative to the present day.
The concert takes an exciting turn as Shibe transitions to electric guitar, propelling the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) into a dynamic realm of musical creativity. Martyn Bennett’s "Bothy Culture" draws inspiration from the 90s rave scene in Edinburgh while honoring Highland traditions. Additionally, Julia Wolfe's "Lad," originally composed for nine bagpipes, is reimagined here for electric guitar and strings, described by the composer as a journey through a psychedelic landscape.
At just 32, Shibe stands out as one of the most exhilarating young talents today, perfectly embodying the electric energy and musical curiosity synonymous with the ACO. This is a concert that promises to leave a lasting impression: “I saw him when…”.
