State Opera South Australia presents Donizetti’s gothic Scottish tragedy, Lucia di Lammermoor. Based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, fragile Lucia is caught between love and loyalty and is manipulated by the men around her. In love with Edgardo, her family’s sworn enemy, her brother Enrico tricks her into marrying another wealthy man to secure the family’s future. Driven to insanity, Lucia enacts her revenge in one of the most famous “mad scenes” in opera.
Emma Pearson portrays Lucia, the role that made Dame Joan Sutherland a star. Morgan Pearse plays the unscrupulous Enrico, while Indian American tenor Alok Kumar makes his company debut as Edgardo. Spanish Conductor Lucía Marín leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and Australian Director Laura Hansford revives this revered John Copley production.
Lucia di Lammermoor, a dramatic classic of bel canto opera, is rich in vocal highlights and breathtaking ensembles. With sprawling sets, lavish costumes, and a romance to die for, this is grand opera at its most glorious.
