The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is Queensland’s premier visual arts institution, beautifully housed in two neighbouring buildings at Kurilpa Point in Brisbane. Together, these galleries offer an ever-evolving showcase of contemporary and historical Australian and international art, alongside dynamic programs and events that captivate and inspire.
With a globally significant collection of contemporary art from Australia, Asia, and the Pacific, QAGOMA is a hub for creativity and culture. The gallery is also home to the Children’s Art Centre, where interactive artworks engage kids and families, and the Australian Cinémathèque, which celebrates film from around the world. Whether you’re exploring the gallery shops filled with art, books, and cultural curios, or relaxing in the outdoor cafes and award-winning restaurant along the riverside, QAGOMA makes the most of Brisbane’s subtropical climate and stunning location.
The Queensland Art Gallery building first opened in 1982 as part of the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank. In 2006, the gallery’s architecture received a stunning update with a new glass entry designed by Robin Gibson, the original architect, adding even more light and openness to the space. As Robin Gibson stated, “It is not only a place for the collection and exhibition of our artworks, it is a place where the walls and barriers of the gallery are broken down, where there is a constant source of interchange between the art world and the public.”
A major milestone came in 2006 with the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), designed by Architectus, to meet the growing demand for contemporary art exhibitions. GOMA’s design is monumental yet welcoming, creating a space that feels international but grounded in the local Queensland context. As architects Lindsay and Kerry Clare noted, “The architecture is impressive and monumental without losing its openness and freshness.”
The history of QAGOMA dates back to the late 19th century, when Queensland artists Isaac Walter Jenner and R Godfrey Rivers successfully lobbied for the creation of a state art gallery. After decades of temporary homes, the gallery finally found a permanent place at South Bank in 1982. Since then, the institution has grown, especially with the introduction of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) exhibition series in 1993, which cemented the focus on regional art and justified the creation of a second building, GOMA.
Today, QAGOMA stands as a two-campus institution, offering an incredible array of art, experiences, and cultural connections to both locals and visitors from around the world.
