Rock chameleons Birds Of Tokyo will stage some unconventional shows in Australia’s favorite rock venues over the coming months. The band will perform in an ‘acoustic busking mode’ for an opening set, followed by fully plugged performances of electric anthems like “Lanterns,” “Good Lord,” “Plans,” and “Unbreakable.” This tour’s name and concept were inspired by their new single “Heartbreakers Bar,” a rowdy, leave-your-cares-behind singalong featuring raw acoustic instrumentation.
Accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek video, the band aims to perform this song live while reinterpreting some of their classics as if they were ‘busking’ in a small bar. After an intermission, they will return for a full rock show, exploring a catalogue that has earned them the APRA Award for “Australia’s Most Performed Rock/Alternative Work” six times and has resulted in five top 3 ARIA album charts, including two #1 albums.
Support for all dates will come from critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Sahara Beck. Surprisingly, “The Heartbreakers Bar Tour” will be Birds Of Tokyo’s first headlining tour since before the pandemic. The band has recently played big gigs with artists ranging from Incubus to Keith Urban and staged two acclaimed tours with Symphony Orchestras across Australia, including multiple sold-out shows at renowned venues like Hamer Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
In keeping with their eclectic touring schedule, the band will also appear as Cold Chisel’s special guest on several sold-out dates this spring. Frontman Ian Kenny expressed excitement about returning to beloved venues like The Enmore and The Forum, stating, “It’s been amazing to appear on all these big outdoor shows, but these two-act gigs will allow us to dig deeper into our catalogue and play some songs we haven’t done in ages.” Guitarist Adam Spark added, “Doing an acoustic set as well as a normal one should keep us on our toes. Hopefully, it’ll be a bit of extra fun for the audiences too.”
